An Apple iPhone Conspiracy

My iPhone is getting remarkably slower as the days pass. I'm convinced this is a ploy by apple -- to make me buy a new iPhone.

I was always the type who'd get given some old phone and hold onto it until it broke. But when I saw the iPhone, I liked it. It seemed useful for me as a filmmaker. And it is. I'm always using the notepad app and I use a few other little useful things. Plus the email function is very important.I have an iPhone 3G. You know the one I mean; the old one. Old used to mean a guy with a cane who spoke of war stories. Now old means the same thing as new except it's called something different.

My iPhone is nearly empty. I'm not into games and stuff. Nothing is on it. Yet it's slowing, rapidly. And the few apps I do use stop updating after a while unless you update the iPhone software. So I upload the software.

But then my phone dramatically slows. My instinct is 'this is ridiculous' but everyone elses instincts seem to be 'get the newer iPhone.' It seems insane to me. This is how things go now. We replace and update things by necessity, because that's how it is. They've added a hundred onto the price of a new Xbox just because you can plug a few extra things in it.

My phone is the same thing it was two years ago, except it hardly works. I haven't damaged it, it's just what they do-- get us addicted and then slow things down so we need the new one. I am getting a bit conspiratorial in my old age; but I feel ripped off. I feel we're all ripped off, all the time, and we just fall for it. We buy shiny new things that should last for fifty years but they last for a year and then we're happy to move on. A guy said to me the other day, "I'm on my 4th Xbox 360". How can that NOT be insane?

Why should I have to buy a new phone? I mean; I have to ----- it currently takes me two minutes just to read a text message. Something needs to be done. I hope someone out there believes my conspiracy theories otherwise they may indeed lock me up!

  1. Is there an Apple store near you? they can take a look at the phone and see if they can speed it up for you.

  2. I know what you mean! My iPhone 4 has gotten so slow lately! You press an icon and it takes an age to respond. Sometimes it just freezes and has to be restarted. I would take it to an Apple store but I think they might blame the huge dent in the back of it where I dropped it on a marble floor, though i'm convinced that is an unrelated injury...

  3. What a scam! I'm glad I don't have one...that would drive me absolutely bonkers.

  4. I agree with you. I don't have a nice phone or a quality computer or even a car because their value and quality depreciate so fast nowadays. What's the point of spending a lot of money for a high quality product that stops being high quality after two months? I finally bought a decent laptop because the last of a long succession of old desktop computers had died and I needed a computer for grad school. Why do they make these things so cheaply? I think they make them so quickly and spend all this money to do so, paying programmers top dollar so they can make it just a smidgen better than the last item. Then they don't bother to really take a look at it because they have to put it out on the market before someone else makes a better one, so everyone is just clamoring for a better sale, a better product, a better purchase, until the whole world falls apart. As a musician, I think about how musical instruments that are 60 or 70 years old are often much better than brand new ones. Why? Because they took the time to make good quality products back then. Sure, that sounds old fashioned to say, "Back in the old days," but it's true.

  5. You don't have an underlying urge to jump from ATT to Verizon do you? Something hidden within? If so, perhaps it's a matter of perception and the phone is fine, you are just subconsciously preparing to switch...

  7. it sounds like you're the type of person that doesn't need to keep up with newer technologies unless they pertain to film-making, so i suggest you just get an old flip phone that probably doesn't cost more than twenty dollers, or, you can just switch providers and buy an android which is better anyway. I have an iphone also, although mine doesn't work due to bodily injuries and the effects of jailbreaking. Regardless, i plan on keeping my phone until it shuts off and never comes back on, i just don't believe in spending money if i don't have to, but if i didn't currently have my phone i would buy a droid in a heartbeat and probably keep it regardless of anything for the next 5 years

  9. The same thing is happening to my phone! It is ridiculous that big corporations try to get the public to keep spending money. My phone worked perfectly fine until the new iphone 5 came out

  10. You ate right!!!! I have the iPhone 4s and since I am computer literate I know an upgrade only means you will now PAY for some of the things you used to be able to do FOR FREE! So I won't upgrade because i know better. And out of the blue .... My camera quit working. They know most idiots will now upgrade so that even worse things happen later like being blocked from sights that will give you free stuff instead of going to iTunes . Nothing is wrong with my camera because it STILL WORKS with certain apps . This phone is one Big step towards big brother.
